Coach Vargas is heading into his 8th year at Northridge and his 3rd as the Varsity Head Coach. Coach Vargas has served as the Middle School Soccer coach in 2016 and JV soccer coach from 2017-2019. His leadership and expertise on the field led to his elevation to Varsity coach in 2021. He graduated from Loyola University with a BA in History and Theology and subsequently went to Harvard University where he received an MTS. He currently teaches High School Spanish along with Middle School History and loves being in the classroom with the students.
As a young man, Coach Vargas played club soccer across the Chicagoland and Boston area where his versatility made him a starter as a midfielder and also as a goalie. He helped one of his club soccer teams – South Side Fire – reach the quarterfinals of the state tournament in 2009. He also played soccer at Whitney Young High School. In college, he continued playing soccer at the intramural level and in recreational leagues.
As a coach, Coach Vargas is committed to playing a style of soccer that is aggressive and offensive in nature. His teams look to possess the ball and press the opposing defense for quick scoring opportunities. As a result of his focus on growing the soccer program, Northridge will have a 3rd team for the first time this year. He hopes to see the sport grow in both participation and excellence this season.
At home, Coach Vargas and his wife Amanda have 2 children, Jeremiah and Joanna.
