NILES, Illinois — The curtain closed on the 2023 Knights varsity golf season Monday with a 7th place finish at the IHSA 1A Sectional tournament in Kankakee.
Led by a strong performance from EJ Spingola '24 (80), the Knights finished in the middle of the pack of the competitive 12-team sectional field. Top performers for the Knights also included Evan Kataoka '25 (86) and Ruairi O'Hagan '25 (87). The Knights shot a team score of 347 on the day, six strokes ahead of 8th place finisher Wateska.
The Knights finished the year with a 7-6 overall record and their first sectional appearance since 2016, though according to head coach Joseph Egan '15, the win-loss record doesn't nearly tell the full story of the much-improved Knights season of success.
"We took a huge step forward this season," Egan said. "Not only did we continue to grow our culture of commitment and hard work, but we started performing in under pressure moments (like the regional championship)."
In a season with profound growth, both on and off the course, Egan credits his seniors for leaving the golf program better than when they arrived.
"None of the progress this year could have been possible without our seniors — Ruairi, EJ and Jack. They set the bar of expectations for Northridge golfers at a new level that I know will leave its impact on our program for years to come. They are great teammates, great golfers and great young men of character. They were a joy to coach and watch over the past four years."
