Northridge Baseball gears up for 2024 campaign

NILES, Illinois — Fresh off the program's winningest season since 2009, the Knights baseball team returns nearly every pitcher from last year's 20-win ball club. Led by a strong senior class, the maroon and gold is looking to build on the momentum into 2024.

In his 26th season at the helm, head coach Pat Hunt has built a culture of hard work, commitment and togetherness. It's that same mindset that he believes can take the Knights where they want to go.

"Positive culture is critical to our success. How is it formed? By having players that put in the hard work beyond what is required. It's critical that players respect each other, push each other and enjoy spending time together away from the field," Coach Hunt said.

On the field, the Knights are led by a strong group of experienced, three-year varsity players. Seniors Ben Hunt and Thomas Hunt, cousins to each other, were named second team all-conference in the ISL in 2023. Ben was also named ISL Pitcher of the Year, boasting a 1.64 ERA with 50 K's across 34 IP. He is committed to play at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Senior Connor Lolli, a Franciscan University of Steubenville commit, took on a larger role this offseason as a vocal leader in the program. Lolli is looking to improve on a season in which he hit .344 with a .459 OBP. Fellow senior Tom Rudolph is also set to take on a larger role on the mound and at the plate. Rudolph is poised to build on the momentum he built during the season finale last year, where he hit a late game tying single in the IHSA quarterfinal against top-ranked Montini Catholic.

"These guys have brought a level of commitment that is vital for our success," Coach Hunt said. "Their work ethic is a great example to the younger players. Their hard work shows their passion for the sport. Everyone can talk a great game, but actions speak louder than words."

Junior Thomas Hansen and sophomore Joe Morales put together highly productive summer ball seasons, and if they are able to carry over that success, Coach Hunt says they could take the Knights to new heights.

"Thomas and Joe exemplify the type of players Northridge is looking for. Through the example of our seniors and their own personal drive, both guys are poised to have impressive years."

The Knights open the season Monday, taking on Rochelle Zell at Heritage Park in Wheeling at 7:00pm.
