On a night filled with gratitude and celebration, the Northridge Knights delivered a performance worthy of the moment. With a 50-38 victory over UIC College Prep on Senior Night, Head Coach Will Rey earned his 500th career win as a high school basketball coach.
The evening began with a special recognition of Northridge's seniors and their families, setting the tone for a memorable night inside a packed gym. The Knights responded with a hard-fought victory that reflected the culture Coach Rey has built throughout his career.
Coach Rey's path to 500 wins is as impressive as the number itself. He began his head coaching career at the high school level, with stops at Crete-Monee and Fenwick. He then spent nearly 20 years coaching at the collegiate level. In 2004, he returned to high school coaching and began what has become a historic run at Northridge, where he compiled 435 of his 500 victories and built one of the area's most successful programs.
While 500 wins is a remarkable accomplishment, Coach Rey's legacy extends far beyond the scoreboard. His commitment to developing young men of character has defined his career. His teams compete at a high level while exemplifying discipline, sportsmanship, accountability, and team unity.
In recognition of the milestone, Northridge Headmaster Niall Fagan addressed the crowd and spoke about the significance of the achievement before presenting Coach Rey with a commemorative 500th career win banner and framed photo. Surrounded by current and former players, family, students, and supporters, the presentation served as a powerful tribute to decades of dedication and leadership.
Coach Rey emphasized that the milestone belongs to many people who have been part of his journey:
"Coaching career milestones are wonderful events because they point to the collective efforts of so many folks who make them happen," Rey said. "In this case, it brings to mind the great coaching mentors who have shaped my career, the outstanding assistant coaches, trainers, and supportive administrators and parents without whom no milestone would be possible but, most of all, it points to those who are most responsible - the players themselves. Our players are the ones who have made all of this possible. And to them, I say thank you for bringing me along and letting me ride your coattails on this magnificent journey!"
Coach Rey and the Knights now turn their attention to the IHSA state playoffs, where they will face Marengo on Monday, February 23, at 6:30pm at Northridge.
