Knights wrestling off to stellar start in 2025

NILES, Illinois — The Knights wrestling program has picked up right where they left off last winter, stacking several competitive finishes in recent meets as the team prepares for the stretch run to end the year. With 15 wrestlers in the program, the Knights boast their largest team ever in 2025.

Prior to the Christmas break, the squad finished 5th out of 15 teams at the Walther Christian Tournament, where the Knights picked up a pair of first place finishes. Junior George McShane and freshman Joe Kopecky each took home the top spots in their respective weight classes. Also making the podium with third place finishes were junior Thomas Suter and sophomore Patrick Manio. Senior Mason Wagner also took home a fourth place finish.

Following the Christmas break, the Knights were back at it competing at Glenbard South in a competitive 15-team field. Once again, the maroon and gold came away with a fifth place performance. The following week, at the Knights Invitational at Sarah Goode, the Knights finished 7th out of 14 squads.

This year's varsity team features several impressive individual wrestlers, led by senior captain Adam Haddad. Currently holding a 15-2 record, Haddad has three first place finishes on the year. The returning state qualifier is ranked in the top 10 in the state of Illinois at 165.

Junior George McShane has also returned this season with a vengeance after having his season end last year in the blood round to qualify for state. McShane is currently 13-5 and is looking to make his first state appearance this season.

A fresh face to the program, freshman Joe Kopecky has taken the state by storm. The skilled 9th grader boasts an impressive 14-4 record and a whopping three first place finishes on the year. Head coach Joe Rhee has high hopes for the young wrestler as his career progresses.

Rhee says he is happy with the progress being made by both the program leaders and newcomers alike, and believes they're on the right track for sustained program success.

"Our wrestling program is proud to have reached an exciting new phase of growth, with two state qualifiers in back-to-back seasons," Rhee said. "This milestone reflects the dedication of our athletes, coaches and supporters. We're looking forward to building on this momentum and continuing to develop a program that embodies hard work, perseverance and excellence. The future is bright for our team!"

Northridge athletic director Will Rey couldn't be more pleased with the early success of the program.

"Starting the program from scratch, Coaches Rhee and Kopecky have built a strong foundation, instilling discipline, determination and the work ethic essential in such a demanding sport like wrestling. Their leadership is quickly positioning the program as a rising force in the area."

Next up for the Knights is the Sullivan Slam this Saturday at Sullivan High School. Soon after, on Jan. 15, the Knights host the Northridge Triangle, featuring Ida Crown and St. Francis (Wheaton).
